Always Choose the Lesser of Two LinksThat seems crazy counter-intuitive, doesn't it? But is it so counter-intuitive? Think about two links, one with twice as much value as the other. What are we really talking about? We're talking about the pages where the links are placed. Given a choice between two links of different value most SEOs will try to get the link with the greater value. But while you may get that link at first what is to stop other people from getting links on the same page? As the links go up the value your link gets goes down. Meanwhile, no one is chasing the link on the other page. But does this mean you should only go after low-value links? No. What it means is that if you can only get links from the same places everyone else is getting them from that you should divide your estimated link value by a factor of 10. In other words, no matter how important the site may be, no matter how good the link opportunity seems, if other people can get the same link then you should assume it really has only 1/10th the value you expect. Now you're really looking at what happens as every new popular link site is endlessly exploited by link building SEOs. They are all trying to breathe from the same balloon and there is only so much air in it. You need to swim away and find a different, less crowded balloon. It may have less air than the one all the others are chasing but you'll get more air from your lonely balloon. This advice is not based on the assumption that any one "lesser" link is really better. No, not at all. Rather, this strategy is a long-term play that evens out the odds in your favor much better than investing a lot of time and resources in trying to get links from highly competitive sites. How much effort does it take to get a really good link as compared to an okay link? The okay link becomes better by comparison as the really good link is diluted by everyone else's crazy linking. So over time you stand to gain more by choosing to work with pickier, less competed-for Websites for your links. The lesson at the end of the day is to get the most bang for your buck not only at the time of linking but also over the lifetime of the link. That way you don't have to constantly work at a frenzied pace to keep up with everyone else. While they play "King of the Link Mountain" they wear down each other's advantages and leave your links alone. You don't have to be an expert in getting people to link to you to do link building right. You just need to learn to NOT follow the crowd. | ||||||||||
